Highlights

The redesign of a classic children’s company to make it more relevant for today.

  • Choose a defunct or dying brand to revive through an updated strategy and new visual identity.

  • Highlights is an American children’s magazine geared towards children ages 6-12 that helps make learning fun through activities like challenging puzzles, engaging stories, mazes, and more. It is synonymous with the waiting rooms of doctor’s and dentist’s offices and is known for its beloved cartoons and activities like “Goofus and Gallant” and “Hidden Pictures.” While the magazine still exists today, its circulation has fallen significantly over the years.

  • I developed a new brand strategy to evolve Highlights beyond simply being a children’s magazine to transcending the page (and screen) to provide in-person experiences and products that help kids become their best selves through collaboration, creativity, and play. For the visual identity, I took cues from the new strategy to evoke a feeling of fun and creativity. I designed the brand mark to resemble a spark of the imagination and chose a vivid color palette to reflect the fun and creative nature of the brand. I selected a rounded sans-serif typeface paired with hand-drawn elements to create a child-friendly and approachable feeling to the new identity.
