The Feather Heist

A type system for a podcast about a boy who makes off with a million dollars’ worth of dead birds.

  • Choose a podcast to visualize by developing a type system in the form of a chapbook.

  • In “The Feather Heist,” an episode of the podcast This American Life, a flute player breaks into a British museum and makes off with a million dollars’ worth of dead birds to sustain his fly fishing lure-tying obsession. A journalist tries to find out what happened. When he finally gets to the bottom of the case, his findings are anti-climactic, and he realizes the entire effort may have been futile.

  • I developed a type system that invoked the mystery and intrigue of the story while making the long transcript easy to digest. I chose black and red to evoke the feeling of crime, while also giving a nod to the bright colors of the feathers mentioned in the story. I chose a typewriter typeface to reference the mystery genre and paired it with a classic serif typeface for readability, given the length of the story. A compressed sans-serif typeface served as a modern accent to bring it all together.
